Taking Advantage Of Your Imported Sleep Stats

NEW: APPLE HEALTH & HEALTH CONNECT NOW IMPORTING SLEEP DATA

On the latest version of Cronometer, users can now import sleep data from Apple Health and Health Connect. Users will have access to a new Sleep Dashboard widget, a new Sleep Chart and will have more options for sleep metrics while creating Custom Charts.

Are you ready to dive into the fascinating world of sleep tracking and nutrition? Understanding your sleep patterns alongside keeping tabs on your diet can be crucial to a healthier you. Sleep and nutrition have a two-way and rather complex relationship, and we want to help simplify it! In this blog, we’ll cover how to import your sleep data into Cronometer and how you can go about leveraging that information.

So, grab a comfy seat (and maybe a cup of herbal tea), and let’s embark on this journey to better health, starting with the power of a good night’s sleep!

How To Import Your Sleep Data

Currently, we support the import of sleep data from Apple Health, Fitbit, Garmin, Oura, WHOOP, Withings and Polar devices. If you haven’t already, sync a device with your Cronometer account.

During the sync process, make sure ‘Import Sleep’ is ticked as one of the metrics to import. Once connected, Cronometer will automatically bring in your sleep data as a biometric in your Diary.

In the next section, we’ll go over where this data will appear and how you can use it to better understand the relationship between nutrition and your sleep.

Understanding Your Sleep Data

On Your Diary

You’ll see your imported sleep data show up as a biometrics in your Diary. Depending on your device, you may see several entries including sleep, sleep score and recovery score.

  • Sleep: this will show your total sleep duration. Click on the arrow on mobile or ‘Show More’ on web to see your Sleep Breakdown, which goes into more detail about your sleep stages.
  • Sleep Score: many devices will give you a score for how well you slept the previous night. If your device offers a ‘sleep score’, it will be imported.
  • Recovery: many devices will give you a score for how recovered and ready to take on the day you are. If your devices offers a ‘recovery score’, ‘body battery score’ or ‘readiness score’ it will be imported as the ‘Recovery’ biometric in Cronometer.

On Your Dashboard

On your Dashboard, you’ll see a Sleep Widget, listing your sleep duration as well as your sleep and recovery scores, if available.

Click into the widget to access your Sleep Breakdown, which goes into more detail about the time you spent in different sleep stages, time in bed, the time you went to bed and the time you woke up.

In Your Charts

In your Charts (Dashboard > Charts) you’ll automatically see a Sleep Stages Chart, which gives you a more visual look at how long you’re spending in each sleep stage over time.

Click into the Chart widget to change the date range or change which days are displayed. You can also overlay fasting periods or your cycle phase (currently available from Oura only) on top of the Chart to see if those may be impacting the quality of your sleep.

Gold users also have the ability to Chart their sleep stage against any nutrient or biometric. If you’re wondering how to apply that ability, keep reading for a couple of ideas!

Leveraging Your Sleep Data

How can I actually use this information, you ask? Here are a few ideas:

  • Chart your alcohol intake against your sleep: drinking alcohol can affect your sleep. Learn how by creating a Custom Chart with your alcohol intake and your sleep. Try looking at your sleep duration, your sleep score and each of the different sleep stages to drill down into what’s being affected the most.
  • Chart your caffeine intake against your sleep: caffeine consumption can impact your sleep. To see if it’s causing any disturbances, create a Custom Chart with your caffeine intake and your sleep. Try looking at your sleep duration, your sleep score and each of the different sleep stages to drill down into what’s being affected the most.
  • Chart magnesium intake against your sleep: magnesium appears to have positive impacts on your sleep duration and sleep quality. To see the evidence with your own personal data, create a Custom Chart with your magnesium intake and your sleep scores and sleep duration.
  • Chart sleep against your overall caloric intake: sleep has been reported to have an impact on your appetite. To see if you’re eating more (or less) when you’re tired, create a Custom Chart with your sleep score and your caloric intake.

The possibilities are endless! Play around with different nutrients, biometrics and even fasting periods to see for yourself how sleep and diet are connected.

For some more information on how to improve your sleep quality, here are the micronutrients to pay attention to and some things to avoid. Or listen to this podcast episode with Dr. Rebecca Robbins for some more handy tips!

Cycle Insights With Cronometer & ŌURA

It will come as no surprise to anyone – especially the ladies out there – that the female reproductive cycle is a complex process that plays into so many facets of an individual’s physical health and mental wellness.

Our latest feature release aims to unlock a new world of insights allowing you to better understand it’s impacts. In an effort to better support women’s health, we can now provide insights into how nutrition can affect mood, energy and overall wellbeing during the course of your cycle.

Not only can you gain valuable insights into what your body and its hormones are up to, you can leverage this information to help track and minimize symptoms. Experiment with adjusting your nutrient intake, exercise and sleep to better support your body’s processes.

The cherry on top is that we got to work with one of our favourite partners, ŌURA, to help launch our first foray into menstrual cycle tracking.

Our first iteration of cycle tracking within Cronometer is leveraging cycle data imported from ŌURA so is currently available to female users taking advantage of our ŌURA integration; however, we do plan to expand the feature so all users can take advantage of it in the near future.

Scroll down to read the full article or jump to the following sections if you’re interested in learning about a more specific area.

How Cycle Tracking In Cronometer Works

For more detailed instructions, visit our user manual for mobile or for web.

Re-Authorize Your Oura Integration

First things first – make sure you’re on the latest version of the mobile app (4.12.0) or login via the web and re-authorize your ŌURA integration – meaning you’ll need to disconnect the integration and re-connect.

  1. Download the latest Cronometer app on your phone or log on to the web version.
  2. Navigate to More > Connect Apps & Devices > Devices > ŌURA
  3. Click ‘Unlink’ or ‘Disconnect’
  4. Click ‘Link’ or ‘Connect’ and login to your ŌURA account.
  5. Include Cycle Tracking in your imported metrics and voila!

Cycle Tracking Settings

Once your integration has been re-authorized and data is syncing from ŌURA, you will see a Cycle Tracking widget on your Dashboard and a feature box on your Diary screen.

By default, both will appear, but if you only want to view one, you can toggle them on or off via More > Display > Dashboard Settings or Diary Settings.

On Your Dashboard

From your Dashboard, you’ll be able to see your imported metrics from ŌURA such as cycle day, cycle phase and body temperature variation.

Click the arrow in the top right corner of the widget to expand and read more information about the cycle phase.

Please note: Your cycle phase prediction can change throughout the day, much like the weather, and this data is only passed to Cronometer once ŌURA is confident about their prediction. This means that the cycle phase you see on your Dashboard will be from the prior day and not guaranteed to be your current cycle phase.

On Your Diary

From your Diary screen, you’ll see a box featuring data from the most recent import regarding your cycle day and cycle phase.

Click the ‘!’ icon to expand the widget and read more information about the cycle phase.

Please note: Your cycle phase prediction can change throughout the day, much like the weather, and this data is only passed to Cronometer once ŌURA is confident about their prediction. This means that the cycle phase prediction will only show up on your Diary for prior days. You will not get cycle phase information on the Diary on today’s date.

On A Chart

On the mobile app (soon to be released on web), you have the ability to visualize cycle phases in any Chart. This will be incredibly useful for gauging the impact of a specific cycle phase on your appetite (overall calorie intake) or cravings for certain groups of nutrients like carbs or fats.

You can also chart how your cycle phase may be affecting your weight, your sleep, your mood, your energy and your exercise levels. Here’s some additional inspo for different ways you can leverage the Charts feature.

Leveraging Your Cycle Data

Currently, we’re importing data from Oura which analyzes temperature variation to predict whether you’re in the Follicular or Luteal phase of your menstrual cycle. More details on ŌURA’s methods can be found here.

While there are four cycle phases that are commonly referred to – Follicular, Menstrual, Luteal and Ovulation – we’re currently showing data pertaining to the Follicular and Luteal Phases.

Read below to learn more about the Follicular and Luteal Phases, what they might mean for your energy levels, mood and which nutrients you should be paying the most attention to during this time.

Follicular Phase

During this phase, the hypothalamus triggers the pituitary gland to release follicle stimulating hormone to trigger follicle/egg maturation. Your estrogen levels rise, which supports energy in this phase.

You may feel increased energy levels and a more stable mood.

Both energy level and mood can be tracked in Cronometer as a biometric. Recording these daily will help you identify trends when looking back at your data over time.

Diet Considerations During The Follicular Phase

  • Maintain a well-rounded diet with complex carbohydrates for sustained energy, lean proteins for muscle repair, and healthy fats for hormonal balance. Include foods rich in B vitamins, vitamin D, and omega-3 fatty acids for mood regulation.
  • Support estrogen production and metabolism with essential fatty acids and Vitamin E. Try ground flax, flax oil or raw pumpkin seeds. Probiotics also support healthy gut flora which supports healthy estrogen levels.
  • Decrease or eliminate foods that contain harmful estrogen or the estrogenic chemicals such as PCBs, dioxin, phthalates and BPA. These can promote estrogen dominance and are linked endometriosis, menstrual pain, fibroids, and cysts.
  • Support testosterone production and increase your Zinc intake. Try pumpkin seeds.
  • Support your upcoming ovulation phase with Selenium rich foods which include meat like pork, beef, or lamb as well as fish, eggs and nuts.

Consider Increasing

  • Complex carbs
  • Lean proteins
  • Vitamin D
  • B Vitamins
  • Omega-3
  • Zinc
  • Selenium
  • Probiotics

Sleep Considerations During The Follicular Phase

Try to prioritize a consistent sleep schedule, create a conducive sleep environment, and practice good sleep hygiene to support optimal sleep quality.

Exercise Considerations During The Follicular Phase

This is when estrogen and testosterone are increasing and it may be easier to build muscle. Take advantage of the increase in energy levels and stamina during this phase. Engage in higher-intensity workouts, strength training, or aerobic exercises.

Luteal Phase

Once the egg is released it develops into a corpus luteum. The corpus luteum releases progesterone and some estrogen. This is what triggers the development of the menstrual lining. If you get pregnant, the level of HCG rises dramatically to support the lining, if not, the corpus lutem shrinks/resorbs which causes the levels of progesterone and estrogen to drop. The fall in estrogen and progesterone is what triggers the lining to shed. The rise and fall of these hormones is the source of “PMS” symptoms.

You may feel fatigue, mood lability, food cravings, breast tenderness, bloating.

You can track energy level and mood as a biometric in your Cronometer account. Gold subscribers can also track additional symptoms by creating a Custom Biometric.

Diet Considerations During The Luteal Phase

  • Your body is slightly less insulin sensitive, so try an increased focus on protein, fat, and fiber while you’re eating during this phase.
  • Maintain a balanced diet with complex carbohydrates, lean proteins, healthy fats, B vitamins, calcium and magnesium to support energy levels and stabilize mood.
  • If you can, try to reduce your intake of refined sugar, which increases the urinary excretion of magnesium, and the retention of water, leading to bloating.
  • Your body may have a harder time cooling down during this phase so its important to stay hydrated and add electrolytes to your water.
  • Increase Zinc intake to support progesterone levels. Try eating raw sunflower seeds, raw sesame seeds, or organic soy.
  • Increase iron, calcium, vitamin E and fiber intake to support hormone metabolism.
  • Make sure you’re getting plenty of essential fatty acids to help decrease inflammation.
  • Try your best to be mindful of portion sizes and reach for healthier alternatives while experiencing food cravings.

Consider Increasing

Sleep Considerations During The Luteal Phase

As progesterone rises you may experience an increase in body temperature, this can affect your sleep. Also how you metabolize your hormones can influence sleep in this phase. Practice good sleep hygiene, manage stress levels, and incorporate relaxation techniques to support better sleep quality during the luteal phase. Here’s a list of nutrients shown to improve your sleep quality and things to consider steering clear of if you want better zzz’s.

Exercise Considerations During The Luteal Phase

Engage in moderate-intensity exercises like walking, swimming, or cycling to reduce symptoms such as bloating, fatigue, and mood swings. Adjust the intensity or duration of exercise based on individual energy levels. Your body may have a harder time cooling down so it’s important to stay hydrated and add electrolytes to your water.

Also Think About Tracking

  • Your Women’s Health Nutrition Score: Cronometer Gold subscribers have access to our Nutrition Scores feature, which includes a Women’s Health score. It bundles nutrients together such as iron, calcium, magnesium and gives you an overall score for how well you’re hitting your targets for the nutrients which women are typically lacking in.
  • Basal Body Temperature Data: Monitor BBT to observe any changes in temperature patterns during the phase. This data helps in tracking hormonal patterns and identifying potential concerns. You can look for trends in your temperature data in the ŌURA app.
  • Flow Rate/Type Data: Continue tracking flow rate and type to identify any changes or abnormalities during the luteal phase, which may provide insights into hormonal balance and overall menstrual health. Gold subscribers can create a Custom Biometric in Cronometer to help keep track of this.

The Future Of Cycle Tracking In Cronometer

This first and current iteration of our Cycle Tracking feature is only the beginning!

While this initial release is leveraging imported data from ŌURA, in future iterations, we plan to allow the ability to self-report symptoms and phases, extending the feature to all Cronometer users.

Get Your Hands On An Oura Ring

If you simply can’t wait to get your hands on an Oura Ring (or an Oura Ring on your hands), we can’t blame you; they’re pretty amazing. The team has been kind enough to offer our users $40 off any ring. Follow this link to cash in on the discount.

Please Note

Cycle Tracking provides only general information and does not provide, nor is a substitute for, medical advice. Predicted fertile windows or ovulation estimates derived from Cycle Tracking should not be used as a form of birth control.

You are strongly encouraged to confirm any information obtained from or through Cycle Tracking with your physician or another professional healthcare provider.

Data from the Cronometer app and Cycle Tracking should not be used to diagnose health conditions, and you should not use data from Cycle Tracking to take clinical action such as making changes to medication or contraceptives without consulting a qualified healthcare professional. If you believe you are having a medical emergency, call emergency services.

How To Use Custom Meals In Cronometer

We’ve just introduced a simplified approach to our Custom Recipes functionality. In walks, Custom Meals. All users on the latest version of the app will have the ability to create Custom Meals, which allow you to combine items into one entry.

What's A Custom Meal?

Custom Meals allow you to bundle foods, recipes, supplements and beverages into one item – saving you time while logging things you consume every day.

When To Use Custom Meals Or Custom Recipes

Our new Custom Meals feature is meant to be a simplified version of Custom Recipes, so you won’t be able to set a number of serving sizes for the whole meal or use any advanced features like ‘set cooked weight’.

Think of it like this – if you’re always eating the same thing for breakfast on weekdays, this is when you would create a Custom Meal. Call it ‘Weekday Breakfast’ and add your items – a smoothie, two coffees, creamer and a teaspoon of sugar.

Custom Meals can include Custom Recipes – so if you already have a recipe created for your morning coffee, you can add that as part of the meal.

Custom Recipes, however, should be used when cooking and wanting to track an entire recipe, such as a casserole, where there may be several servings within the one recipe. Gold users can use the Recipe Importer to do this extra quick!

How To Create A Custom Meal

You can create a Custom Meal from the Foods tab in either the mobile or web app. Check the user manual article for detailed instructions – click here for web or click here for mobile

Gold subscribers can also multi-select ingredients in their diary and create a meal from that selection using the three-dot menu in the top right corner of the diary page.

Adding To Your Diary

Add the meal to your diary the way you would any other food entry. Start adding a food and search for the name of the meal.

While searching for the food, you can tap over to the ‘Custom’ category tab, which will filter the food search database to only your Custom Foods, Custom Meals and Custom Recipes.

Explode It

Once a meal has been added to your diary, you can explode it which will create individual food entries for each food item in the meal. On mobile, swipe right on the meal and tap the ⋮ icon or on web, right-click on the meal then select ‘Explode’.

By exploding a meal, you can easily adjust measurements for individual items or delete an item altogether. Making changes to items after you’ve exploded a meal will not alter the meal itself.

Why You Should Use Custom Meals

The biggest benefit is that it saves you time! You’ll no longer have to log each food, beverage or supplement separately. Hot tip: if you take multiple supplements or vitamins every day, create a meal with all of them included so you can add it in one fell swoop.

Gold Users Log Faster

Gold users can schedule Custom Meals to repeat, saving even more time logging.

Gold users also have the ability to multi-select items that are already added to their Diary and create a meal from that selection. From your Diary screen, click the three dot menu in the upper right, select ‘multi-select’, choose all of the food entries you want included in the meal, click the three dot menu again and select ‘create meal from selection’.

Nutrition Score Focuses on Men's Health

Available Free To Male Users For The Month Of June

It’s no surprise that males and females are quite different in many ways but they both require a unique set of macro and micronutrient targets in order to be their healthiest selves. So, in celebration of Men’s Health Month in June, we are releasing a men’s health Nutrition Score to all users for the month of June! Normally our Nutrition Scores are only available to our Gold Subscribers, but for the month of June, we are releasing this one score to all of our male users, free of charge.

What Is A Nutrition Score?

Our Nutrition Score feature bundles specific macro and micronutrients together and gives users a percentage value for how they are hitting their targets. We have Nutrition Scores for all targets, electrolytes, bone health, immune support, metabolism support, antioxidants, keto & more!

What Goes Into The Men's Health Nutrition Score?

Our men’s health Nutrition Score includes the nutrients that males are typically lacking such as protein, fiber, vitamin A, vitamin D, magnesium and calcium. The Nutrition Score will give you a percentage for how well you’re hitting your targets for these nutrients. In order to score 100%, you’ll need to reach your recommended daily intake of all of these nutrients. Going over the recommended daily intake will also affect your score.

Why Is This Important?

Protein
Men generally have higher protein needs due to larger lean body mass and tend to prioritize protein intake over any other macro or micronutrient. Studies show that eating healthy sources of protein can lower the risk of several diseases and premature death (10).

Fiber

A high fiber diet has been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease, diabetes, diverticular disease, and constipation (1). Fiber helps regulate the body’s use of sugars, helping to keep hunger and blood sugar in check, hence why it’s touted to help with weight management and digestive health.

Calcium
99% of the body’s calcium is stored in the bones and if one does not eat enough calcium-containing foods, the body will remove calcium from bones (4). Keep your bones in tip-top shape by keeping an eye on your calcium intake.

Vitamin A
Men typically lack vitamin A in their diet, which is needed to be able to see at night. It also helps with immune function. In some studies, higher intakes of vitamin A can be linked to lower risk of lung cancer but that result has yet to be replicated by supplementation. So it’s best to try and get your vitamin A intake through food.

Magnesium
This mineral plays an important role in assisting enzymes to carry out various chemical reactions in the body such as building proteins and strong bones, and regulating blood sugar, blood pressure, and muscle and nerve functions. Magnesium is also required for energy production (7). Men typically lack magnesium in their diets so keep your body thriving with adequate magnesium intake.

Vitamin D
Together with calcium, vitamin D helps protect you from developing osteoporosis. Vitamin D also is required for muscle function, immune and nerve function (8). Dietary intake is not the only source of vitamin D. We can make vitamin D in our skin through exposure to sunlight. Vitamin D from foods and supplements is more important for those with dark skin, or little exposure to sunlight, such as those who live in cloudy or northern climates.

Where Can I Find This Nutrition Score?

If you’re a free user you won’t have to do anything to see this score as we’ll automatically provide you with it for the month of June. Make sure you’re on the latest version of the mobile app and swipe three times on the header bar on your diary screen. You’ll see the men’s health Nutrition Score automatically pop up under the all targets Nutrition Score. On the web app, it’ll show up in the Nutrient Targets section on your diary page beside the all targets Nutrition Score.

For Gold users, on the web application navigate to your More > Display Settings and select the men’s health Nutrition Score as one of your eight choices. On the mobile app, go to More > Targets and then Nutrition Scores. Watch a video tutorial on YouTube.

An Additional Note On Gender Specific Nutrition Scores

First of all, we’d like to acknowledge the limitations of current practices in the medical and nutrition industries when it comes to inclusivity of trans and non-binary people. Currently, due to a lack of scientific research available to account for other options, Cronometer nutrient target calculations are sex-based, which forces you to choose a sex in order to accurately calculate settings within the app. We know that’s not ideal for some of our users, and as the research becomes available, we hope to better serve our community of transgender and non-binary individuals. Based off of the existing research, we have compiled a few nutrition considerations for the transgender population into a blog.

We understand that the release of these Nutrition Scores may be triggering for some individuals, and if this applies to you, we ask that you reach out to us. We will gladly offer a solution so you will no longer see these Nutrition Scores on your diary page.

In the months and years to come, all of us at Cronometer hope to improve how our app serves all members of our community.

Nutrition Score Focuses on Women's Health

Available Free To Female Users For The Month Of May

Here at Cronometer, we’re big supporters of the fact that women are not small men! Females require a unique set of macro and micronutrient targets in order to be their healthiest selves. So, in celebration of National Women’s Health Week, we’re giving all of our female users access to our women’s health Nutrition Score! Normally our Nutrition Scores are only available to our Gold Subscribers, but for the month of May, we are releasing this one score to all of our female users, free of charge.

What Goes Into The Women's Health Nutrition Score?

Our women’s health Nutrition Score includes the nutrients that females are typically lacking such as iron, magnesium, calcium, vitamin D and fiber. The Nutrition Score will give you a percentage on how well you’re hitting your targets for these nutrients. In order to score 100%, you’ll need to reach your recommended daily intake of all of these nutrients. Going over the recommended daily intake will also affect your score.

Why Is This Important?

Calcium
Females are more susceptible than men to osteoporosis (3). Out of the estimated 10 million Americans with osteoporosis, 80% of them are women, meaning their calcium intake should be top of mind. 99% of the body’s calcium is stored in the bones and if one does not eat enough calcium-containing foods, the body will remove calcium from bones (4). Keep your bones in tip-top shape by keeping an eye on your calcium intake.

Iron
Women need significantly more iron than their male counterparts, mostly due to blood loss during menstruation. After menopause though, the recommended intake decreases from 18mg to 8mg per day. Iron is a mineral that the body needs for growth and development and carries oxygen from your lungs to other parts of the body. Iron is also useful to make some hormones. Iron deficiency or anemia, is the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide (6) so to counteract the odds, make sure you’re getting enough iron in your diet.

Magnesium
This mineral plays an important role in assisting enzymes to carry out various chemical reactions in the body such as building proteins and strong bones, and regulating blood sugar, blood pressure, and muscle and nerve functions. Magnesium is also required for energy production (7). Women typically lack magnesium in their diets so keep your body thriving with adequate magnesium intake.

Vitamin D
Together with calcium, vitamin D helps protect you from developing osteoporosis. Vitamin D also is required for muscle function, immune and nerve function (8). We can make vitamin D in our skin through exposure to sunlight. Vitamin D from foods and supplements is more important for those with dark skin, or little exposure to sunlight, such as those who live in cloudy or northern climates.

Fiber
A high fiber diet has been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease, diabetes, diverticular disease, constipation (1) and even breast cancer (2). Fiber helps regulate the body’s use of sugars, helping to keep hunger and blood sugar in check, hence why it’s touted to help with weight management and digestive health. Fiber needs for women decrease once you’re over the age of 50.

Where Can I Find This Nutrition Score?

If you’re a free user you won’t have to do anything to see this score as we’ll automatically provide you with it for the month of May. Make sure you’re on the latest version of the mobile app and swipe three times on the header bar on your diary screen. You’ll see the women’s health Nutrition Score automatically pop up under the all targets Nutrition Score. On the web app, it’ll show up in the Nutrient Targets section on your diary page beside the all targets Nutrition Score.

For Gold users, on the web application navigate to your More > Display Settings > Select the women’s health Nutrition Score as one of your eight choices. On the mobile app, go to settings, targets and then Nutrition Scores.

We understand that the release of these Nutrition Scores in your diary may be triggering for some individuals, and if this applies to you, we ask that you reach out to us. We will gladly offer a solution so you will no longer see these Nutrition Scores on your diary page.

In the months and years to come, all of us at Cronometer hope to improve how our app serves all members of our community.
